Beer wenches are back

They're back. They are not banned. And they are sure to take plenty of attention away from our cricketers during the Test and one-dayers in Sydney.

Beer wenches. They were a topic of hot debate at last summer's Sydney Test and are sure to create a storm again when cricket's one-day circus hits town on January 11. They may even make their presence felt during Steve Waugh's farewell Test.

For those who missed the phenomenon, scantily clad girls are hired for $65 an hour to wait hand and foot on groups of thirsty fans, allowing them to enjoy the cricket.

Then, for an extra fee the wenches, or another girl from the same company, would do a private strip away from the ground for those fans who had had their fill of sun, drink and cricket. Full Story...

Six plead not guilty to vice charges

Six of eight defendants accused of operating a prostitution ring out of Chula Vista, Lemon Grove and parts of San Diego pleaded not guilty yesterday in San Diego Superior Court to charges that could lead to prison if they are convicted.

One of those arrested on warrants issued Friday was 25-year-old Allmighty Supreme Mayo of Chula Vista, who was identified yesterday by a prosecutor as the "kingpin" of the alleged prostitution ring, which authorities contend brought in as much as $50,000 monthly.

Mayo had his name legally changed several years ago from Deshawn Mays, according to court records.

The arrests were made after a two-year investigation by vice officers from several law enforcement agencies. Full Story...

German city introduces sex tax

The German city of Cologne is to introduce a sex tax on brothels, erotic sauna clubs and massage salons from next year.

For brothels, the tax will work out at 150 euros per bed per month, a city spokesperson said.

"I would not be surprised if the costs are passed on to customers," she added.

The tax will also apply to circuses and funfairs, but it is the sex business which could help most to help fill Cologne's coffers.

"We are a big city and because of this have a lot of these type of offers. We estimate revenue of up to two million euros," the city spokesperson said.

Jens Metzger, from the North Rhine-Westphalia state Staedtetag, said many German cities had already imposed taxes on sex trade fairs and strip clubs.

"However, an entertainment tax on prostitutes is new to me," he said.

Metzger believes other local authorities will be looking closely at Cologne's "sex tax".

In a change in the law, municipal authorities are now able to decide themselves how they impose entertainment taxes.Full Story...

Bakersfield prostitute strips attacker and takes him to police

A skinny rapist met his match in an angry, 275-pound prostitute, police said.

Adrian Castillo Ramirez, 140 pounds, allegedly tried to sexually assault a 24-year-old Bakersfield prostitute who was nearly twice his weight.

But she took his knife, stripped him naked and paraded him in front of other prostitutes, after asking how many of them had ever been forced into sex at knifepoint. Then she tried to take him - still naked - to the police station, reports said.

Castillo was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, and with committing forcible sex acts on the 24-year-old and on a 37-year-old woman in a previous incident. He also was convicted of four counts of rape in 1988.

Castillo pleaded innocent Wednesday, and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, police said. Full Story...

Sex Workers Call For Equal Rights in International Movement

Today people in at least twenty cities across the world will be calling attention to crimes against sex workers, namely prostitutes, in the wake of serial killer Gary Ridgeway’s dozens of murder victims. From San Francisco to Taiwan to Brussels, activists across the globe are calling attention to the need to decriminalize prostitution and afford sex workers the basic rights given to everyone.

The International Memorial Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, originally intended to be a one-off event, gained momentum as word spread and more and more cities joined up, organizing the sex workers to raise attention to their plight. It looks like it will be an annual event - Robyn Few, one of the organizers, told AVN.com that cities have already started asking to be able to participate in next year’s memorial.

“So, yeah. I guess is it going to be an annual event,” she said, moments before she walked into City Hall to present a petition to Oakland’s City Council calling for a decriminalization of prostitution. Few expects the city will be receptive to the petition.

“I’ll tell you why. They just arrested Shannon Williams (a Berkley teacher who was arrested for prostitution, whose case became a public relations disaster for the city) and made national news because of that,” Few said. “This is ridiculous and it’s s time to stop wasting our money going after prostitutes, when our murder and other violent crime rates are so high.” Full Story...

Woman Faces Charge for Selling Sex Toys

Joanne Webb intended to spice up marriages and earn extra cash by selling erotic toys.

Instead, the former fifth-grade teacher and executive board member of the Burleson Chamber of Commerce faces criminal charges and embarrassment after a police sting.

"It's ludicrous to think that the government can step into our bedrooms," said Webb, who has been married 20 years and has three children.

Webb was one of 3,000 consultants for Passion Parties, a San Francisco-based company whose representatives set up Tupperware-type parties for women who feel more comfortable buying marital aids in a private home than at an adult bookstore or on the Internet. Full Story...

Beekeepers insist honey is natural Viagra

Bulgarian bee keepers are marketing thistle-infused honey as a natural and cheaper alternative to Viagra.

Georgi Georgiev, head of the Bulgarian bee keepers association, said they are optimistic their new line will be a best seller.

He said: "It really works, thousands of Bulgarians cannot be wrong, and we have not had a single complaint."

The thistle honey launched at the annual Bulgarian Bee Keepers Fair in Sofia, where it was marketed as the solution for Bulgarians hoping to sweeten up their love lives in time for Xmas.

The Sofia Municipality Apiarists' Union said it was mostly women who were making a bee-line for thistle honey to boost their men's sexual appetite.

The trade fair has been extended to the rest of the week because of demand for the product. Full Story...
