A German brothel threw open its doors over the weekend for an open house aimed at raising money for charity, drawing a nearly unprecedented crowd to the establishment, organisers said.

"Club Escort" and the prostitutes' aid group Mitternachtsmission (Midnight Mission) attracted about 200 people at 40 euro ($A69.57) a ticket for an art exhibition at the bordello late Monday to benefit under-age street walkers.

Sex, however, was not for sale.

"The response was overwhelming," said charity director Jutta Geissler-Hehlke.

The brothel's proprietors opened up the sado-masochism chamber to display erotic oil paintings for sale while the bedrooms held donated raffle prizes. Full Story...

Calling it the worst day of his judicial career, a judge blasted Congress on Monday before imposing what he called an excessive mandatory 10-year prison sentence on a teenager who distributed child pornography over the Internet.

U.S. District Judge Gerard Lynch said he would have sentenced Jorge L. Pabon Cruz to five years if Congress had not insisted on a punishment more severe than what worse child pornography crimes require and that creates obstacles to rehabilitation.

"It's a bitter and unfortunate sentence. I wish I could do more for you," Lynch told Pabon, a 19-year-old who had been living in Rochester, N.Y., when he enabled distribution of thousands of child porn pictures from September 2001 to December 2001. "With a heavy heart and with a firm conviction that the sentence being imposed is neither just nor the best way to protect society nor the way a humane society should treat a very young person with a terrible problem, I impose the mandatory minimum of 10 years." Defying the stereotype of the average pornography consumer as a desperate old man in a raincoat is a study that shows significant numbers of women are taking an interest, too.

Women make up about 20 per cent of respondents to an online survey, part of the Federal Government-funded study called Understanding Pornography In Australia.

Head researcher Alan McKee, a senior lecturer in media studies at the University of Queensland, said that although results from the three-year study were far from complete, they gave an indication of the changing image of pornography users.

"Even just 10 years ago the idea of an Australian Women's Forum was considered slightly radical, because the belief was that women weren't really interested in sexualised images," Dr McKee said. Germany's most famous ex-porn star says she is working part-time in a Frankfurt brothel because she's addicted to sex.

Gina Wild said: "It's a secret I've carried around with me for a long time - I go to the brothel several times a week."

Growing numbers of married people are turning to internet chat rooms for sexual thrills, a US study has found.

Most spouses who got involved with the opposite sex over the internet did not think they were doing anything wrong, said the report by a University of Florida researcher.

But partners felt betrayed by the virtual infidelity, even though in most cases no physical contact had taken place.

Police in Berlin have shut down a laundry after they found it was a front for a brothel.

After several hours of surveillance, police raided the premises in the city's Neukoelln district.

Some 50 officers searched the building, and found the women working there were more involved in taking clothes off than in getting them clean.

AIKEN - Six people were charged with prostitution in an investigation of a call-girl ring operating in the Augusta-Aiken area, authorities said Monday.

Richard Beatty, 37, of Clearwater, was arrested Saturday at a restaurant off Interstate 20 in Aiken County, as was Sandy Frashuer, 31, of Belvedere, Aiken sheriff's spokesman Lt. Michael Frank said Monday.
